Student Activities

Fine Arts

The Summit Academy :: Columbus Art Program aligns to the Ohio Academic Content Standards thus providing clear, rigorous expectations for all students.

The study of fine arts is important to the basic education of all students. The intent of the fine arts standards is to ensure that students experience, understand and value the arts in their everyday lives as contributing citizens of a diverse society. The fine arts standards encourage meaningful connections to concepts and topics studied in other content areas without compromising the integrity of each art's discipline.

Students progress through a comprehensive, sequential arts education program.

Therapeutic Martial Arts (TMA)

The mission of TMA is to provide for physical, mental, emotional, and social growth of Summit Academy students through multicultural training in the martial arts. TMA uses an interdisciplinary approach and an interactive hands-on style to teach the fundamentals of martial arts.

Scouting in Schools

What is different about Summit Academy is the way in which students learn. Scouting has developed fun, hands-on activities to teach skills in many different program areas. Many of these are directly related to the subject matter that is being taught in the classroom. Wolf and Bear achievements, Webelos activity pins, and Scout merit badges are used as resources to teach subject matter whenever applicable. Students earn the appropriate award in the scouting program.

Social Skills Groups

After years of difficulty in traditional schools and frustrations experienced at home and with their peers, many Summit students are socially disabled. They may lack confidence, turn to negative behaviors, or in the case of many Asperger's children, they may lack the ability to function well in social situations and perceive the feelings, attitudes or emotions of others. Crucial training needs to be provided in order to overcome these deficits in social skills, and we have developed a full repertoire of activities that can help.

Summit Academy :: Columbus teaches a specific social skills lesson daily. In addition to the specific lesson, social skills are embedded throughout the instructional day both in academics and peer interactions.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

Summit Academy :: Columbus students have multiple opportunities to supplement their social development with activities which include school-wide guided experiential learning activities with local organizations such as:

  • Columbus Zoo & Aquarium
  • COSI
  • Franklin Park Conservatory
  • Circle S Farms
  • Ohio Historical Society
  • Ohio Supreme Court
  • Recreations Unlimited

If you are aware of an organization that could benefit our students, please let the school
office know!
